Data recovery is our job, but the best recovery is the one you never need. The 3-2-1 rule is the simplest backup plan that protects homes and businesses alike.
3 copies of your data
Keep the original plus two backups. One copy is never enough: if the backup drive is plugged in when disaster strikes, both can be lost together.
2 different types of storage
For example, an external hard drive and a cloud service, or a NAS and an external SSD. Different media rarely fail at the same time.
1 copy kept off-site
Fire, theft, floods and ransomware can destroy everything in one place. Keep at least one copy somewhere else - in the cloud or in another building.
Test your backups
A backup you have never restored is only a hope. Every few months, try to restore a few files to make sure the backup really works.
